Today is the first day is probably a week that I’ve woken up to the sun being out here, and I can’t express how glorious this is. You never quite know how much you miss something like that until you’ve got it back again. I’ve just had a really yummy breakfast: French toast, but instead of syrup, which I often find a bit much in the morning, I fried some banana slices in coconut oil with a pinch of sugar and put that over the toast instead. I probably ought to have taken a picture of it, but I was hungry and now it is decidedly all gone. I’m sitting here sipping my coffee, the day looks to be gorgeous, and I saw a great movie last night. Life feels pretty good at the moment.
The movie was Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Thrones Shadows, and while I will readily admit that putting both Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law in a film together is probably enough to satisfy me, it was great fun in general. A bit slow to start, but once it got going it was a good romp. I agree with Ebert about it being more of an action film than a “Sherlock Holmes” film, but so was the first one, so my expectations were well met.
Fandom will definitely be going nuts for it, as they made sure to lay the subtext on REALLY thick this time around. There was no need for the slash fan squint to see that there was more to Holmes and Watson’s relationship than met the eye. As Downey and Law have made clear in the past that they put homoerotic subtext in on purpose, I know it wasn’t just me.
Noomi Rapace was lovely, and I was just so pleased she was in this one, as she did such a phenomenal job with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and I’ve been wanting to see more of her. (Rooney Mara, you have a very high bar to meet, my dear.) Jared Harris did a fab and perfectly creepy job as Moriarty, but Stephen Fry’s Mycroft was probably the most memorable supporting character. He was genuinely delightful.
It also bears mentioning that we saw the movie in one of Carmike’s new Big D theatres. (Which really just sounds like Dudley Dursley runs a moviehouse.) You have to pay a bit more per ticket, but it really was a fantastic theatre experience. I’m very picky about my sound quality, and it was really superb. I definitely recommend spending the extra couple of bucks if you have one near you.

I hear very good things about it. I’ve been meaning to get around to reading it for awhile.
